the artist – Kari
As a kid Kari played with terracotta clay in her Dad’s studio. It wasn’t fired to suit her three year old sense of aesthetics! So she became a musician! However she always “made stuff” with her hands, from fabric, from timber, with beads and silver, multimedia and whatever materials came her way.
Re-visiting ceramics and visual art as an adult, Kari graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Ceramics at Sunshine Coast TAFE.
Her ceramic artwork has won awards and been exhibited in SE Queensland and Japan. Her installations have appeared in dance concerts, environmental festivals and in galleries.
Kari is also a professional Marriage Celebrant of unique ceremonies and occasions, also a performing musician.
A main passion is combining artforms, drawing on her performing and collaborating skills and her fine art. In recent years she has exhibited at Makers Gallery-Brisbane, The Old Ambo-Nambour, Rosebed Street Gallery-Eudlo, Main Street gallery-Montville, The Eumundi Gallery, Noosa Regional gallery in a solo show, at Fusions Gallery-Brisbane, and Barratt Books Gallery-NSW,
Her work features installations and groups of pieces following a specific theme; Pieces of My Heart following an emotional journey, or works entitled Cunei Forms referencing ancient Phonecian cuneiform text.
She pioneered performance pottery at Woodford Folk festival in an ongoing project called Illuminated Hands, and instigates cross artform projects. More recently her work explores an emotive story, reaching out with themes of loss and renewal.
Kari has worked in a variety of professions including lecturer at QUT, event director for Maroochy Waterwatch, and at CERES, Victoria, a musician, performer and workshop co-ordinator and teacher, and has done some unusual things; been a concert-organ grinder at Victoria Markets, a wardrobe assistant at Victorian Opera and sometimes performs street theatre as a frog!
